Residential Programs
The Solid Waste Management Department provides its residents with a variety of
programs and services to meet their trash and recycling collection needs.
While we do offer numerous disposal options, our primary service continues to be
our residential curbside collection program.

- The City of Mesa provides refuse customers with a black barrel for refuse
collection and a blue barrel for recyclable material as part of their
standard trash service. 60- or 90-gallon barrel service is
available. Selecting the smaller size barrel will reduce
monthly trash bill from $23.34 to $20.83 per month, generating a $2.51
monthly savings.
- Green barrels, designated for green waste material, are available for an
additional monthly fee.
- Each barrel is collected once a week. Barrels need to be at the
curb, with handles facing your house, by 6:00 a.m. on collection days.
- If you are unsure of your collection days, please call the Solid Waste
Management Department at (480) 644-2688 or view our
Collection
Schedule Map.
- Extra blue barrels are provided free of charge and extra black barrels are
available for an additional monthly fee.
- The City provides collection service on all holidays.
- If your barrel is in need of repair (i.e.- broken lid, wheel, etc.),
please call us to place a service or replacement request.
- Residents can learn more about recycling by watching the

- DO place the barrel as close to the curb as possible with the handle of
the barrel facing the house.
- DO bring the barrel in from the curb on the same day it is serviced, or no
later than 6:00 a.m. on the day after.
- DO put wet garbage, grass and animal waste in sealed plastic bags before
placing them in the BLACK barrel. Visit our
Bag & Tie page for
more details.
- DO NOT contaminate blue barrel with non-acceptable items. Mesa
maintains a "three strikes and you're out" policy, which means
that if your blue barrel is found contaminated three times, City inspectors
will remove the barrel.
- DO NOT place barrel near objects that may prevent collection such as
vehicles, light poles, mailboxes, planters, etc.)
- DO NOT park vehicles near or in front of barrels that are placed out for
service.
- DO NOT overfill barrel. The lid must be closed in order for the
container to be serviced.
- DO NOT place items on the ground around the barrel or on top of the barrel
itself.
- DO NOT use any other containers other than the City provided barrels for
garbage, green waste or recyclables.
- DO NOT put dirt, mortar, concrete, plaster, building materials, toxic or
hazardous material, motor oil, or unwrapped animal waste in the barrel.
- DO NOT put hot ashes, cinders, coals, or any other burning materials in
the barrel.
- DO NOT let children play inside the barrels, or near the collection
trucks.
- DO NOT block the sidewalk preventing free access for pedestrians.
