Appliance Recycling Program
For a nominal fee, the City of Mesa provides residents with
a convenient collection service for unwanted appliances such as
refrigerators, dishwashers, washers/dryers, hot water heaters, and stoves.
You Can't Just Throw It Away!
Many appliances we use every day contain chemicals that are harmful to the
ozone layer -- Earth's natural protection against the ultraviolet radiation from
the sun. Refrigerators, freezers, window and car air conditioners are some
examples of appliances that contain refrigerants commonly known as "freon".
The danger of freon being released into the atmosphere prompted Congress to
amend federal laws that prohibit the release of ozone-depleting refrigerants
into the atmosphere. Since July 1, 1992, it has been a requirement that
freon be removed from appliances before they are disposed of. These
restrictions have changed the way the Solid Waste Management Department collects freon-containing
appliances.
Currently, solid waste staff collects the appliances and places them onto a
flat bed truck. When the truck is full, the appliances are taken to our
vendor where a certified technician recovers (removes) the freon. The
refrigerant is then purified and sold for use again. The scrap metal from
these appliances is also recycled and reused for other products.
You Can Do More For The Environment!
The City also accepts other large metal appliances that do not contain freon
- like water heaters, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, and evaporative
coolers. These appliances are collected and recycled along with freon-containing
appliances.
Scheduling Service Is Easy!
