Volunteer Fire Hydrant Painting Program
- Fire hydrants throughout the City
require regular and routine maintenance,
including painting. When the hydrants
are painted, they provide higher
visibility for fire crews when
responding to fires and aesthetics to
the neighborhood.
- Having volunteers paint hydrants
also allows Fire Department members to
continue to attend to their duties such
as business inspections, pre-plans,
public safety presentations as well as
responding to fire and medical
emergencies, which benefit the residents
within our community.
- Having volunteers paint hydrants
provides significant cost savings to the
City.
The following will provide you an idea
on what will be required of you to complete
the project:
- Gather 4-7 groups or crews ( 3
people per group or crew) to assist in
painting hydrants. The project may
take 60-140 hours of community service
and is suited well for Scouts or other
groups with a large labor source to rely
on.
- Volunteers will be asked to paint
hydrants within one square mile which is
typically 130-200 hydrants.
- Conduct an "orientation" with
groups/crews to review instructions.
- Make cardboard templates 2 ft x 4 ft
with cutout.
- Provide paint and wire brushes for
each group/crew.
- Divide area to be painted among all
groups/crews.
- Provide plastic to each group/crew
to avoid paint drips.
The Mesa Fire Department will provide the
following supplies:
- Hydrant paint and thinner.
- Safety vests.
- Map(s) of area needing hydrants
painted.
- Meeting place (optional) such as
fire station.
Hydrants are painted standard yellow per Mesa
Fire Standard Operating Procedures 105.07.
