Planning and Transit
This group is responsible for developing, implementing
and updating the City’s long-range transportation planning program.
The
Mesa
Transportation Plan (.pdf 194 pages) is the City's transportation
guiding policy document, providing a blueprint for
future decisions and investments through the year
2005.At the regional level, the
staff coordinates with the Maricopa Association of Government (MAG) and the
Regional Public Transportation Authority (RPTA) on a
wide variety of transportation issues, including the Regional Transportation Plan (.pdf
195 pages) and implementation of Proposition 400,
the 1/2-cent countywide sales tax, which includes
funding for street and arterial roadway
improvements, improved transit service and
bicycle
and pedestrian programs.
Additionally, transportation planning staff oversees the development of
transportation capital projects starting with initial project assessment and
including project approval, pre-design and continued coordination with the
Engineering Division during design, right-of-way acquisition and construction.
Each of the capital projects is closely monitored an reported in monthly,
quarterly and annual reporting.
The
Projected 5-Year Transportation Projects
(.pdf 1 page) map includes all projected projects to
be completed during the next five years. This
map includes street maintenance, Regional
Transportation Plan (RTP) arterial streets upgrades,
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and transit
projects.The
Major Arterial Street Improvements
(.pdf 1 page) map includes all the Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) arterial
street projects in the City of Mesa projected for
improvements over the next 20 years. The RTP
was adopted in 2003 and arterial streets
improvements are an element of that plan.
Funding for RTP arterial street improvement projects
requires a 30% local funding match from the City of
Mesa.

responsible for overseeing the fixed route bus
service, East Valley Dial-A-Ride and the
RIDEChoice

agencies.
The Transit staff

planning and management of Mesa’s high capacity
transit initiatives including
Light Rail (scheduled
to open in Dec. 2008), Bus Rapid Transit service
(also scheduled to open in Dec. 2008), and planning
for the extension of Light Rail to downtown Mesa,
per the RTP.
