Bicycle Program

The Bicycle Plan is a modal element of the Mesa Transportation Plan.  It establishes a coordinated strategy to encourage and develop bicycling as an integral part of the City’s multi-modal transportation system.

The Transportation Department designates new bike routes and adds new bike lanes and multi-use pathways throughout the city.  Many of these bikeways were recommended in the City's Mesa Bicycle Plan.  The Department also responds to requests from neighborhoods for bicycle-related improvements on local streets, and educates the public about the hazards of riding their bikes on the wrong side of the street.  Currently, there are approximately 70 miles of bicycle routes, 160 miles of bicycle lanes and 2.25 miles of paved bicycle paths in the city.  The future system includes bicycle routes, bicycle lanes, and shared use paths, as well as recommendations for vital end-of-trip facilities.
