The new cameras are smaller in size and provide clearer images for better
vehicle and driver identification. The red light cameras are triggered by
sensors installed in the roadway. When a vehicle runs a red light, the cameras
take high resolution color digital photos of the violation event. The cameras
are not triggered by vehicles that are in the intersection when the light turns
red. The program operates 24 hours a day and in all weather conditions.
This program also utilizes intersection speed cameras, which
detect and document speed violations through intersections. Some of the most serious
crashes that occur are caused by drivers speeding through intersections,
regardless of the color of the light. The City has identified our most dangerous
intersections based on crash data captured. These top intersections for crashes
and/or fatalities will be equipped with the new speed on green.
The following intersections
are currently activate with Intersection Speed cameras: Alma School & Guadalupe,
Gilbert & Baseline, Gilbert & McKellips, Greenfield & Main,
Lindsay & University, Broadway & Stapley, Southern & Country Club, Hampton &
Power and Power & Southern.
The camera will capture images of the vehicle as well as the
facial image of the driver of those vehicles. The cameras are configured to
capture speeders driving 11 miles per hour or more over the posted speed limit
through the intersection. See photos.
This newly expanded program will continue to provide safer Mesa
streets. Additionally, with the implementation of this digital technology,
drivers who receive notices of violation will be able to view their violation,
pay fines and schedule a hearing online. In the past, drivers had to physically
visit a service center to view their violation images.
The new digital cameras are supplied and installed by American
Traffic Solutions, the leading provider of state-of-the-art, turn-key vehicle
detection and imaging technology designed and built specifically for photo
traffic enforcement.
Remember to slow down and stop on red.
