Patrol Operations consists of four patrol districts and the Patrol Resource Division. Within each district is a Community Action Team (CAT) and a Bike Unit, both of which have aided tremendously in focusing on Community-Oriented Policing (COP). Community Policing is a philosophy of looking at police and community issues more closely to identify the contributing factors of the issues. Our goal is to establish partnerships within the community to assist in this process to develop and implement problem-solving strategies to address the issues facing our community. The Community Action Team and the Bike Squad work in partnership on problem-oriented policing projects to resolve specific problems in district neighborhoods. The Bike Units not only patrol targeted areas of the district, but some also serve as School Resource Officers (SROs) to area schools where they assist in school security and instructional activities. A national grant awarded this year made it possible to complete the goal of an SRO at every junior and senior high school in Mesa. The additional funding provided for nine additional SROs, bringing the total to 24.  For more information on the philosophy of community policing, visit the Community Action Team website at www.cityofmesa.org/police/cat/default.aspx.
