Mesa Police Department Cons, Frauds & Scams
Using the Better Business Bureau Name
August 2004 - The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has issued a warning to
consumers and businesses about two questionable operations that are
using the BBB name to trick victims. One business is perpetrating an
advance fee loan scam that targets consumers and businesses with poor
credit records. The business claims to be a member of the BB and gives a
fictitious phone number to verify their status. They ask for money in
advance from the consumer to secure the loan.
The other operation is a telemarketer that poses as a BBB employee. The
caller claims to be calling about a BBB complaint or to update BBB
files. They attempt to gain personal information about the company and
its operations.
Please double check with the local BBB whenever you receive a call from
someone claiming to be with the BBB. The telephone number for the local
BBB is 602-264-1721.
