The FBI has launched a Child ID app for the iPhone; other systems will follow in the months to come. This app provides a convenient place to electronically store photos and vital info about your children so that it's right at hand if you need it. You can show the photos and provide physical identifiers such as height, weight, hair and eye color to security or police officers on the spot. There is also a tab you can use to quickly e-mail the info to authorities. The app also includes tips on keeping children safe as well as specific guidance on what to do in those first few crucial hours after a child goes missing. See flyer for more info.
The Mesa Police Department is proud to announce the launch of Online Alarm Permit Applications. This new feature offers our 24,000 permit holders the ease of applying for alarm permits by using the Internet. Users can now pay assessment fees online as well. The Alarm Enforcement Unit enforces Mesa City Code 6-15. Mesa City Council adopted this ordinance in 1984 to manage a growing number of false alarm calls. Enforcement of the ordinance, alarm user education and false alarm prevention has reduced alarm calls. In 2010, Mesa Police received about 10,000 fewer alarm calls than in 2001; that is over 300 fewer calls every month. Reducing these alarm calls also saves the City of Mesa about $500,000 in officer response costs per year. Even with this reduction, officers still responded to over 11,000 alarm calls in 2010. Ninety-eight percent of those calls were not actual crimes; they were false alarms. A monthly False Alarm Prevention Class educates alarm users on general ordinance information, police procedure and alarm system information. This class is a great opportunity for alarm users to ask questions from informative speakers. Please call 480-644-2699 for further information.
