Office of Historic Preservation

JAMES A. MACDONALD HOUSEThe purpose of Mesa's Historic Preservation Program is to encourage, through preservation planning, facilitating public knowledge, understanding and  appreciation of the City’s historic past, promote better awareness of its architectural and cultural history, and to foster civic and neighborhood pride so that future generations will have the opportunity to appreciate and understand Mesa’s unique cultural heritage.

Historic Preservation Background

Mesa's Historic Preservation Program has been developed to encourage individuals, companies, and agencies to undertake programs that will preserve the historical, cultural, and architectural heritage unique to the city of Mesa.

This Historic Preservation Office serves as the historic planning function for the City of Mesa.  For Mesa History, please visit the Mesa Room or Mesa Historical Society and Museum

The Mesa City Council adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance - Administration and Procedures to promote the preservation of historic and cultural resources and the compatible use of these resources with surrounding properties. In addition, a comprehensive Historic Preservation Plan was adopted by Council in 2002 that establishes the goals and objectives of the historic preservation program.

Preservation of historic and cultural resources contributes to the stabilization of neighborhoods. It also encourages complementary design of alterations and renovations on historic landmarks and within historic districts, and for contemporary buildings developed on properties adjacent to historic landmarks and districts.

Since 1984, four comprehensive surveys have been performed.

The purpose of each survey was to identify and document each remaining pre-1945 building in Mesa’s original townsite and outlying areas, provide historical information on the origins, evolution and significance of each building, and to evaluate their eligibility for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
