What Firefighters Do

The job of a firefighter may not be what you think. Fighting fires is only a small part of what fire fighters do. As a matter of fact, only 20% of 9-1-1 calls are fire related. The other 80% are requests for Emergency Medical Service (EMS) such as heart attacks, car accidents, home accidents, drowning's, etc.

Duties are not limited to responding to calls. Firefighters provide a wide variety of other services during their work shift. Below is a partial of list of some of these duties.

  • Building Inspections
Shift Work

Mesa Firefighters work 24-hour shifts. Work begins at 7:00 AM (0700) and ends at 7:00 AM (0700) the next morning. Firefighters normally work ten (10) shifts per month.
