Thank you for your service

Much has been said
recently about changes
in the political
landscape, both local
and national. Typically,
a change is good in
bringing fresh ideas and
differing perspectives
when facing numerous
challenges and
decisions. Too often the
call for change has been
based on emotion and
misunderstanding of the
facts, or even political
maneuvering. Frequently
overlooked is the
sincere, dedicated
service of everyday
people who serve
selflessly amid
relentless criticism.
It has been my privilege to serve over the past
six years with some of the finest people I know.
With different backgrounds and opinions, each worked
together to achieve what they truly believed was
best for the citizens of Mesa. I have learned to
respect our similarities and differences as we have
waded through the challenges facing our community.
There have been many changes within city hall the
last few years that will be the groundwork of a very
bright future for Mesa. Unfortunately, those who
would criticize are either unwilling or unable to
recognize and acknowledge the positive steps that
have been taken. They would rather blame the
messengers for bringing to light the realities of
where we had been and where we were headed without
significant changes.
The previous council made some tough financial
decisions that included building up some financial
reserves for future stability. Our efforts and
planning resulted in a very favorable review from
Wall Street rating agencies, giving us the highest
bond rating we have had in over 20 years - even in a
time of economic decline.
The new council will come to realize how much
easier their job will be because of the work done by
the previous council. I look forward to working with
the current council and hope to also learn from
their new ideas and perspectives as we work together
to move Mesa ahead.
To the former council members, I want to publicly
thank you for your dedicated service. I sincerely
appreciate the opportunity I have had getting to
know you. It has truly been an honor to serve with
you.
